Finning UK and Ireland,
Headquartered in Cannock, UK

Finning are the UK dealer for Caterpillar (think diggers and other types of machinery and engines). They sell and provide parts and service for plant equipment and engines to customers in various industries including mining, construction, petroleum, forestry and a wide range of power systems applications.

Introduction and challenge

Finning UK attend various outdoor construction trade shows. At these events customers are given the opportunity to ‘try before they buy’ in a demonstration area. There is also an area for these customers to talk to sales representatives and learn more about the Finning CAT brand and product range - a car show room for diggers if you like. This set up has consistently delivered positive results for Finning so rather than rely on these events (which are held annually) the idea to have a purpose built, dedicated structure onsite at the head office in Cannock was conceived.

This new retail space was to house Finning’s Ready2Go product range which is built on the key principles of accessibility, availability and affordability. Customers were to be given the option to drive away (or have delivered the next day) a select range of machines.

The concept design was built around that of a premium car dealership.

Initial thoughts for this structure turned to the traditional temporary structures. The Finning team concluded that whilst they are just the job for outdoor events and exhibitions, the finish and interior fell short of what they wanted to share with customers. So the hunt for a modular building supplier began and a recommendation from a customer led Finning to LCS in May 2017.

Stand out quotes

“We really connected with LCS, they understood very quickly what we wanted and more importantly why we wanted it. As often happens, the project and concept evolved and we changed our minds on more than one occasion. The reaction to this was always positive and the whole team at LCS has a great can-do attitude. In the end the project was delivered on time and to budget.” - Tom Moss, Finning Product Manager and Project Lead.

“The building gets lots of attention. Our sales team love it as it really supports them during the sales process and our customers love it because they now have one of the very few places in the UK where they can try before they buy in our demo area. We had a hugely successful open day and visitor numbers, enquiries and orders are all on plan.” - Janine Turner, Finning General Manager Cat Compact Machines.

“Everything happened as it should, when it should and the build period was started and completed on time with the minimum of impact on Finning UK’s business. Careful planning and our team’s unrivalled experience means we can consistently deliver what our customers need and that is very satisfying for us and them.” - LCS Project Manager (LCS Modular & Containers).

Solution

LCS Modular Buildings To ensure the building delivered a true car dealership experience, lots of glazing was included in the design and because display items including excavators and rollers are significantly taller than a car, the specification included a reinforced floor with a 3.2m ceiling height.

Action

The LCS Project Manager visited Finning UK’s head office to conduct a site survey and better understand the requirements and project brief. Following this initial meeting LCS created concept drawings of the modular building - or CAT Compact Store - as it became known.

  • After various presentations and meetings the three suppliers were whittled down to one, with LCS Modular Buildings being the preferred and appointed supplier.

  •  Within a matter of weeks the preparation for the groundworks began. Normally LCS offer this service, but with Finning having the excavators and machinery in house on this occasion the client delivered this element of the project.

  • As part of the initial site survey LCS assess the site suitability for the LCS delivery service fleet of hiabs. Having our own, experienced (and fully CPCS certified) drivers and operatives really helps our installations run smoothly.

  • Delivering projects safely with no injury or incidents is always LCS’s primary objective. Finning share our values and as such the consideration to de-risking the project - given it was built adjacent to their staff car park - was paramount.

  • As with all LCS projects the company was able to call on trusted and experienced team and partners to support the installation of the CAT Compact Store. With Crane hirer ABA Crane Hire involved, the three segments were craned in over some protected trees with the set up taking just 3-days. LCS’s expert handover team of electricians, plumbers and joiners began the final fit and got the store ready to go.

Conclusion

One of the main objectives for Finning at the start of this project was to improve their customers’ experience and drive sales. The modular building provided by LCS became the perfect fit, matching the Company brand and promise with a fantastic facility for customers to visit to discover more about how Finning can help their business.

The new CAT Compact Store was installed in just 3 days and handed over in 10 days safely and without incident. We expect it to continue delivering excellent results for Finning for many years to come.
